What is the difference between 2% and 5% Minoxidil concentrations?
The original concentration of Minoxidil that was approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss was 2%. It was a water-based solution. The results that could be obtained in terms of regrowth of lost hair and even in terms of maintenance of existing hair for sufferers of androgenetic alopecia was limited at best with this concentration.
Eventually a higher concentration of Minoxidil, 5%, was developed based in alcohol and propylene glycol. 5% Minoxidil solution was found to be more effective that 2% in maintaining existing hair and regrowing lost hair. In general, it has been found that the higher the concentration of Minoxidil the better the effect in terms of treating androgenetic alopecia. However, there is an increased risk of adverse side-effects with higher concentrations.
Dr. Lee of Regrowth, LLC, has developed a 15% Minoxidil-containing solution called Xandrox 15, which I have personally used and found to be the most effective treatment for me personally in treating my own hair loss.
