Stem Cells in Hair Follices can Form New Hair and Skin Cells

Scientists at Rockefeller University, New York, have shown that stem cells taken from the hair follicles of mice are potent enough to possibly reverse baldness. These stem cells can also potentially heal skin wounds such as burns and other wounds.

The stem cells can reproduce themselves indefinitely in the lab, and have been shown to form skin, hair, and sebaceous glands in mice. These cells contain some of the same genes as are found in embroyic and bone marrow stem cells. The fact that they have been shown to reproduce hair and skin bode well for future research into curing baldness.
