Nizoral (Ketoconazole)
Original Purpose or Use:Anti-dandruff shampoo for fighting seborrheic dermatitis. FDA Approved?Yes (as a shampoo in both 1% and 2% formulations), also as a cream. Scientific Results:Ketoconazole is an anti-fungal that has been shown have both anti-androgenic properties and to have similar growth stimulating effects as Minoxidil 2%. Observed Results:The shampoo: some mild hair regrowth, decreased sebum (oiliness) on scalp, reduced itchiness and inflammation, control over seborrheic dermatitis.
Notes:Nizoral shampoo should be used by all hair loss sufferers because of its properties as a growth stimulant and anti-androgen. I recommend using it at least twice a week. I use it 5 times a week and cannot stress how much I believe it has helped in controlling my dandruff, caused by seborrheic dermatitis. It leaves my scalp feeling healthy. I also mix several drops of emu oil with it for conditioning purposes (and for the properties of emu oil itself). This is an excellent combination. See the products I use for more information on this trick. Side Effects:None that I have observed. Some people report itchiness or dryness of the scalp. If you experience this I highly recommend that you try mixing some emu oil with it when you shampoo. For most people whom I've recommended this too and received feedback from, the results have been great -- virtual elimination of the irritation. In the USA you can purchase the 1% formulation without a prescription from drugstores and supermarkets, but you need a prescription for the 2% formulation. For the cream, you need a prescription and can get it at most pharmacies.
