Cyclosporin
Original Purpose or Use:Cyclosporin is an immunomudulator medication used to deal with various auto-immune disorders. It is used to suppress an over-active immune system, one of the hallmarks of conditions like psoriasis, inflammatory alopecias, and many others. It has also been used to prevent organ rejections in transplanted organs. FDA Approved?Not for the treatment of hair loss specifically, but it has been approved for other uses. Scientific Results:A study done on cyclosporin (listed below) has shown that it is effective in helping damaged anagen hair follicles remodel themselves and was shown to regrow some hair. Observed Results:At Morphollica.com we have not used Cyclosporin and therefore have not observed any results. Notes:Cyclosporin's method of action is by immunosuppression. It can be very effective for certain conditions and may be beneficial for hair loss, especially hair loss caused by inflammation such as various forms of cicraticial alopecias (such as Lichen Planopilaris) or folliculitis. It can have powerful and serious side-effects. Cyclosporin should not be used haphazardly and should only be used for specific cases as prescribed by a skilled and knowledgeable dermatologist. It is not recommended for use in common hair loss or androgenetic alopecia in the form of either male or female pattern baldness. Side Effects:Cyclosporin can have severe and serious side-effects associated with its use. It can cause problems with kidney function and hypertension. Short-term effects include nausea, perceptions of tingling in fingers and toes, elevated cholesterol, joint pain, headache, swelling of gums, and growth of hair in areas where it's not desired, and other side-effects. At low dosages most of these side-effects are limited. It is most dangerous when taken orally, but can be used topically as well.
