Itchy Scalp with Hair Loss
I am a 54 year old woman who has recently went through lots of stressful changes in my life. Weeks ago my scalp started itching, and got red and I began to lose my hair. Everytime I would wash it, I would lose 90-150 hairs. I went into the dermatologist who took a biopsy, that showed nothing, and it actually seemed to make it worse from the stress of that, and he told me to use minoxidal, and it might be stress. The minoxidal said you will lose any new growth after you quit using it. I am totally devastated and depressed, and don't know what to do.Its still falling out bad, and I don't want to use something that I have to use the rest of my life because all the new growth will fall out after you quit. I have lupus, but the biopsy came back negative for that. I noticed that first my scalp got red and itchy, and then my hair fell out. Its getting so thin on the one side I'm afraid I'm going to go bald, and the more stressed and upset I get over it, the worse its itching and falls out. Could you Please tell me why its red, itchy and falling out, and if theres something I can do to keep it from getting worse? I don't know what to do? Thank You, Sherry
From your description it appears that you may have seborrheic dermatitis. You should not use Minoxidil because it will irritate your scalp. Did you doctor examine to make sure that you do not have Lupus on your scalp?
You should begin to treat your scalp with a topical steroid agent like Dermasmooth to reduce the irritation.
Please keep me updated on your progress.
