hair loss
Dear Dr. Bauman,
i have had sebhorric dermatititis for years. at first i thought that it was a really bad dandruff which i could never get rid of, then one day a dermatologist told me i had psoriasis. however, when i researched that condition, i realized that it could not be what i had because my symptoms were not common to those identified with psoriasis. so i went to another dermatologist who told me that i had sebhorric dermatitis. he gave me medication which i have been using for over a year, but have only been receiving minimum relief from. my major concern with this condition is the fact that it causes my hair to either thin out or drop out. i could never boast of healthy hair no matter what product i use because it\'s as though this condition is feeding off of my hair. my hairline is especially affected. right now i wear wigs right through because i have no hairline. i have no history of hair loss in my family. what should i do?
I am sorry to hear that the hairloss condition has you turning to an artificial solution (wigs). Unfortunately, seb-derm and/or psoriasis can detrimentally affect your hair, and sometimes they are difficult to treat. I suggest visiting your dermatologist again if you are not getting relief from the treatment he or she prescribed. Once the medical condition is under better control, we can address the hair loss issue. It would be difficult for you to use rogaine/minoxidil, for example, if your scalp is itchy, red and flaky to begin with. You need to get a handle on the medical condition first. If the hairline does not rebound once the inflammation subsides, we can always transplant it. Let me know if this makes sense.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
