Triangular-shaped thin spot behind bangs
Hello-
I am a 32 year old female, and ever since I was about 18 I have had a thin spot behind my bangs that is triangular shaped (the triangle shape tapers to it's point as you get further back on my head. The widest part is all along my hairline area). It is about 2 inches long or so and it seems that at different times throughout my life (after times of stress, postpartum, etc.) the area gets sparser, (along with the rest of my hair!) but then kind of "fills in" again as the rest of my hair regrows. But it is and always has been thinner than the rest of my hair, and it troubles me quite a bit. Does this sound like anything you have heard of before, and can I do anything about it?
You are describing a relatively uncommon hereditary condition called triangluar alopecia. If this indeed is the diagnosis, the treatment is a localized hair transplant. Please contact my office if you would like me to take a look and confirm the diagnosis.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bernstein
