Liver loading
Hi Dr. B -
I realize you have commented that there is a biological model of men who naturally dont have the coenzyme of DHT that finasteride helps to decrease........however; -- what do you think about the long term use that finasteride has on the liver itself having to breakdown the drug and metabolize the drug. Is the liver being overburdened>> thanks
This is one of the first questions hair restoration physicians asked when Propecia first came on the market in 1997. Thankfully, there is no evidence that a 1mg dose (or even a 5mg dose--used for prostate enlargment) puts any burden on the liver. Routine liver enzyme tests are NOT recommended as the standard-of-care when someone is on Propecia.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
