the use of propecia
dear dr. bauman , can you tell me what is the "vertex"? and does propecia help for the hair on the sides and back of the head as well as the crown?
The crown or vertex area is the back/top of of the scalp that includes the whorl (swirl or "cowlick"). The crown or vertex is the typical location of the 'bald spot' where the gradual miniaturization of hair eventually turns into bare scalp. Propecia will only protect those hair follicles that are genetically susceptible to male pattern hair loss (the fronal and crown/vertex areas). Male pattern hair loss only occurs at the frontal, crown/vertex areas because those are the follicles that are sensitive to the body's hormones. Hair around the sides and back of the scalp is typically immune to male pattern hair loss.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
