Question Topic

Teen girls shouldnt be balding!!!!whats wrong w/me?

Question

Im a 19 yr old female, and about a year ago during a time when I was going through ALOT of stress,(nor was I eating right) I noticed that I had a little bald spot not even big enough to notice, really. But gradually it grew larger and larger. I was so freaked out about it that to this day I refuse to even look at it myself, let alone anyone else. Recently I went to put my hair up in two pony tails and my cousin had told me that i was loosing my hair in the center of the back of my head too... Im freaking out I dont know what to do or where to go.. or even who to talk to. Nobody seems to have an answer, most have never even seen such a thing happen. Anyhow both spots are about the size of a childs fist, and Im scared that It will progress and Ill go completely bald..permanently.. if I dont stop it now. Please reply I need any kind of info I can get! Thank u j

Answer

Diagnosis without examination is difficult. First, however, you need to determine if the area of loss is a round, smooth, completely bald area. If this is the case, it is likely alopecia areata. If the area is just slightly thinning and decreasing in coverage, then it might be hereditary hair loss. In either case, poor stress-management and not eating right can make the problem worse. A visit to the local dermatologist will determine if there is alopecia areata up there. However, you'll need a hair restoration physician to get started with effective treatment.
