Thin Hair
My son is 23 and for the last 10+ years has had thin hair. You can see his scalp in the back and near the forehead. His dermatologist prescribed propecia about two years ago. I really never noticed any great improvement and he went off it about 6 months ago. He is considering going on it again for preventative measures. Does propecia or any hair loss product actually help men with hair that is just naturally thin or is it just for male patterned baldness?
Determining whether your son has naturally thin hair or is suffering from male pattern hair loss can easily be determined with a hair-density measurement. This can be done at a qualified hair restoration physician's office. Just because he didn't see any 'improvement' doesn't mean he wasn't getting a benefit from Propecia. Propecia is designed to mainly protect against future hair loss. Regrowth can happen, but it is usually subtle. If he is off the medication and is suffering from male pattern hair loss, more hair loss will certainly occur. Is there hair loss in the family?
Sincerely,
Dr. Bauman
