tellogen effluvium & FPB
Dear Doc -- I have a long history of hair problems starting in my teens (I finally diagnosed myself after numerous dermatologists telling me I was just crazy) with tellogen effluvium. Now I'm in my forties and I have the classic female pattern baldness but also I have periods of telogen shedding. Aldactone and birth control pills have worked pretty well but I have a lot of see through scalp now. Trying the laser comb to see what happens.... Here is my question - should I try Avodart and maybe go back to some other topical like rogaine or rogaine with the retin a combo as well as maintaining the aldactone/BCP regime? I was told I wasn't a good candidate for transplantation, so I'm just wondering what else to do to generate growth. When I was younger I would eventually get around 80% of my loss to regrow, but my last two losses (very very severe) I have not recovered from.......I have to use a scalp coverup now. Rather distressing. P.S. Am interested in cyber consult. Most docs don't know much about this or don't give a blankety blank.
If you are seeing more scalp shining through, you might be a good candidate for a hair transplantation. Keep in mind that todays hair transplant techniques for women are VERY different from years ago. Smaller grafts placed between your exisiting follicles up there can restore coverage to the area. Your non-invasive regimen is slowing the hair loss, but probably some degree of transplantation will be needed to reach your hair restoration goals.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
