Hairmax Laser Comb and Shedding Hairs
Dr. Bauman, I have been using minoxidil for about ten years and have also started using the Laser Comb since January 2005. For the first 3 monts I used it 3 times a day and now I am using twice a week. I got a little scared as I started shedding a lot of hair and my hair started looking thinner. This also happened to me when I used Propecia for 2 years which I discontinued due to bad side effects. My hair turned out to be thinner after Propecia. Can the same thing happen with the Laser Comb? Please advise. Thank you.

Shedding with the initiation of ANY hair growth treatment is commmon. This is a short-lived condition that is believed to be related to the stimulation of resting follicles. It is commonly thought that when the resting follicles start to 'kick in' and grow again, they push out the old hair shaft that had remained 'stuck' in the resting follicle. There is absolutely, positively, NO reason why propecia or laser therapy (when used properly) would cause hair loss. It is simply an impossibility in my book. Remember that not all patients have a stoppage of hair loss with propecia. You may be one of the 10% of patients who continue to 'drift' in terms of coverage even while taking the medication. With the lasercomb, we do see occasionally the shedding with the initiation of growth. Remember that it takes a good 6-12 months to see the effects of the laser, or any treatment. Have you considered restarting the Propecia?
