sore scalp and shedding
Hi there. I've been slowly experiencing hair loss since I was 17. I'm now 36 years old (and female). The thinning is occuring mostly in the frontal area and at the sides. The center(all through the part) of my scalp is often sore(even if I do not not style it in a pony tail) but there is no sign of inflammation or otherwise...it looks healthy but does not feel that way. Sometimes I lose up to 300 hairs a day which I know is not normal. This really bothers me. What exactly could be the cause of this shedding and the soreness accompanied by it? Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated...I've already spoke to a derm and he could not help me. Thank you. Kirsten
Kirsten,
While an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan is impossible via the internet, I can tell you that scalp sorness is very common with female pattern hair loss. The shedding you are experiencing sounds quite severe. Typically, excessive shedding is NOT a sign of female pattern hair loss but a sign of Telogen Effluvium. Do you have male or female hair thinning in your family? Aside from your dermatologist, have you considered visiting a hair loss specialist or a physician who specializes in hair restoration?
Sincerely,
Dr. Bauman
