Receding Hair Loss
Dr. Bauman,
I am starting to experience a receding hair line. I have been doing reseach on Rogaine and Monoxidil, the active ingredient in Rograine. I have also found Monoxidil available for sale on its own. Is it better to buy Rogaine with Monoxidil or will a generic Monoxidil product be as beneficial? Also, can I use the Monoxidil product along with Propecia? I understand that Propecia helps to maintain what you have and possibly restore hair loss in certain areas. Is this correct? Are there any treatments that would allow me to do less maintenance (i.e. not have to apply a solution to my scalp twice daily like Rogaine)? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Tony,
Propecia and Minoxidil are the fda-approved treatments for hair loss. They work by different mechanisms, so they can be used together. Minoxidil has a very short 'half-life' and is eliminated from your body quickly. That is why it must be applied twice a day. Additional non-invasive treatment regimen might include laser therapy. Some positive results have been seen, but laser therapy is not fda-approved, yet. In the areas that are 'dead and gone,' hair transplantation will be needed to restore new follicles into those areas.
Let me know what further questions you have.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
