hypothyroidism
Dr Bauman,
I have hypothyroidism. Last fall my hairline receded to about a 2.5 on the Norwood Scale.. Right now it's at about a Norwood 1 or 1.5.... I am on synthroid and have been taking finpecia for about 10 months.. Is it possible for me to get back to my original hairline? I have very a thick mass of fine white hairs where my original hairline was... Will they ever become dark? What is your advice?
Steve,
Only VERY RARELY does treatment with synthroid help revive lost follilces. Finasteride (Propecia) stops hair loss in 5 out of 6 guys and regrows some hair in 2 out of 3. It is more likely that follicles that suffered an accelerated death are just that... dead and gone.
P.S. finpecia might not be finasteride.
Adding minoxidil or laser therapy might get that peach fuzz to grow longer and darker, but there are no guarantees. You might eventually need transplantation to restore the hairline.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bauman
