Question Topic

shampoo induced hair loss?

Question

Hello, I am a 22 year old male that's in good health. About 3 months ago everything was fine with my hair...Then on a whim I tried to use a Selsun Blue shampoo (Selenium Sulfide 1%)(I had very minor dandruff). After about 4 days of daily use my hair became quite brittle. Then after about 7 or 8 days it became limp. At this time when I attempted to style my hair with a fiber product I had always used a lot of hair fell out. My itchy scalp if anything got worse. I quickly switched shampoos back to the PertPlus I always have used. However, my problems have not stopped. My hair is still more limp than normal and falls out very easily. I have now switched to a thickening shampoo which helps with appearance and texture for a time, but does not solve the problem. I can no longer style my hair with the fiber as too much hair falls out. I thought this was a temporary problem, but just to be sure I went to a clinic to get it looked at. The diagnosis was the beginnings of normal male-pattern baldness. This seems like quite a coincidence to me. Maybe I'm just in denial, but the fact that the hair loss and texture has been throughout the top of the scalp, and not just the back, makes me wonder if this is correct. Are there any conditions you can think of that my symptoms would be a result of? I have also been under quite a bit of stress from June to the present. Thank you for your help.

Answer

Male pattern hair loss is 99% hereditary, although stress, illness, medications, nutrition, etc. can play a role. Notice that I did not say "shampoo..." Treatment for male pattern hair loss includes medications like Propecia and Minoxidil, as well as procedures like follicular-unit hair transplantation.
