Question Topic

Diet and supplements for healthy hair

Question

Hi Dr. Yechiel, I realize your main focus is on topicals for skin and scalp/hair health, but I was wondering if you could give some advice on diet and supplements that may help with our situation. Also, do you think cholesterol plays any role? I ask because many are taking plant sterols which are said to lower cholesterol. Some making this connection have even said they\'ve seen regrowth. And..I see there were human trials on one of your inventions for the treatment of high cholesterol. Maybe I should have said the topicals are just ONE of things you\'re focusing on..

Answer

Hello Jacob, Liposomes are very effective in extracting cholesterol and other sterol-based chemicals (including DHT) from cells. Nanosomes can sometimes be more active than large liposomes due to thermodynamical considerations (I will not elaborate on this aspect here). The requirement is that the Nanosomes are in close proximity to the cells or the sterol pools. However, there is no need for physical contact between cells and liposomes since the process is based on reaching chemical steady-state between them. The medicinal treatment I developed was for IV injected small liposomes, and our topical application of Nanosomes is not intended as a medicinal treatment. Lowering cholesterol may reduce production of steroid hormones and, in the process, also reduce DHT. Cholesterol is very important for cell membrane integrity, though high cholesterol may cause cell membranes to be very rigid. Playing with hormones is a risky game, since the difference between good and bad is in the actual concentration and the fine balance between them. Topical application of Nanosomes is a much safer way to go about this. As for oral supplements, I can suggest a partial list. This is not intended as medical advice but as a scientific point of view. If you wish to take such supplements, you should consult your physician about your general health and about the right doses for you, based on your body weight and your general health: 2-3 multivitamins (comparable with Centrum) a day, fortified with extra vitamin B, such as B50 and C 500-1,000 mg (B and C are water soluble and are removed from the system quite fast and its better to take them several times a day). Vitamin A, and D (should not be over-dosed). Vitamin E, only natural, since the racemic form (as in synthetic E) may cause a sensation of chest pain. Glutathione and alpha lipoic acid are very potent co-antioxidants. Minerals such as zinc and selenium can be added. I hope this helps.
