5+ Years Propecia
Dr Bauman
From the studies I have seen Propecia wanes after about year 2 continuing to year 5.What have you seen happen after year 5 ? Does it effectiveness continue to wane or is a plateau reached ?
Thanks
Hair counts and scalp coverage (very important) improve as more and more follicles that were minaturized by DHT 'rebound' and get thicker and longer. Eventually, you reach a point where improvement is no longer occuring and the propecia simply maintains those hairs that were normally 'at risk.' 90% of men after 5 years on the medication look the same or better. The data shows a plateau of hair counts at 2 years, BUT, remember, SCALP COVERAGE continues to improve as those miniaturized hairs increase in caliber and length.
It is assumed that the decreased DHT and, therefore, protection from most future hair loss will continue as long as you stay on the medication.
In my practice, patients after 5 years still are maintaining their results. A few patients tend to 'get used to' the results from the medication, and then decide to increase their coverage is specific areas with a hair transplant procedure.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
