Mature hairline hairloss
A mature hairline is considered a Norwood 2 and is normal expected hairloss for every man with or without MPB. Is this hairloss DHT related? What causes our hairlines to change to mature hairlines and why does propecia not effectively stop this?
We simply don't have the scientific data to answer your questions. However, not all men progress to a NW2. A good friend of mine from medical school has a NW1 at age 36 with no signs of recession or thinning. My opinion is that Propecia would probably stop the recession--if it was started early enough. The point is that 'most' men have some sort of recession after they hit puberty and this is considered 'normal.' With regard to transplantation, this means that we should strive for a 'slightly' receded look with our restorations and not an 'adolescent' hairline.
I always council my hair transplant patients using a 'conservative' approach to the hairline. Naturalness is KEY.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
