Retinoic acid during the day time
Why shouldn’t retinoic acid be used during the day?
Retinoic acid (tretinoin or all-trans-retinoic acid) has been used
for many decades as Retin-A in the treatment of acne. More recently it is
being advocated to remove wrinkles due to sun damage and aging, mostly as the
retinol. It works as a biologic response modifier essentially having the
effect of a chemical peel. It allows for better penetration of the topical
minoxidil and promotes epithelial cell growth. However, retinoic acid is degraded by strong light, so there is no
benefit to using it during the day, when any bright light will render the
medication ineffectual. Vitamin A is most easily destroyed by UV-A rays (at
about 332nm), which are capable of penetrating directly into the dermis. Not
even overcast days protect against UV-A rays, which penetrate through clouds
as well as glass windows. In addition, fluorescent lights, etc also generate
UV-A rays. Richard Lee, M.D. Regrowth, LLC, www.Minoxidil.com
