eyebrow hair loss
I am a 46 year old female in good health (now). I am not in menopause. I had a chronic fatigue illness for about 4 years which doctors suspected might be Lyme Disease (tested negative but there are many false negatives). Before the tenative diagnosis, many other illnesses were ruled out (several autoimmune diseases, low thyroid, even menopause, etc.). I went on a month-long course of antibiotics last summer which cured me of the chronic fatigue illness (yeah!). However, I experienced a tremendous amount of eyebrow hair loss over the course of the illness--gradually over those years and evenly for both brows--and the six months after the antibiotic treatment. So far there is no regrowth in the outer two thirds of the brows in particular (which are perilously thin to almost nothing left). I am not plucking and I am not pulling out the hairs. Any ideas? A dermatologist recommended putting Minoxidil on the brows, but I am worried about taking any drug long term (even if it works you have to be on it forever?) or having the hair grow unintentionally in other areas of my face or body. Also, there's been no studies of this drug for eyebrow hair regrowth and its effectiveness (that I know of). Any suggestions as to what I might do next? Many thanks for your help!
Dear Maggie,
We must first diagnose your condition. You may have alopecia areata or thyroid disease. Please have blood work done for your thyroid with TSH and perform a good physical exam by your dermatologist to rule out other skin conditions before you initiate treatment with Rogaine.
