Minoxidil Tolerance or Finasteride Tolerance
Does the continued use of topical minoxidil or finasteride
cause a tolerance for the medication?
Not really. But, because most patients do not see any
significant continued 'improvement' after a few years, they are assuming
that the medications have reached a 'tolerance' and are no longer
'working'. All of the proven current treatments for MPB help to recruit
atrophic follicles to grow thicker hair again for approximately two,
sometimes as long as three, years. After that time, no significant
numbers of miniaturized hair follicles are recruited to mature again,
but the medications help to keep the hair in the anagen phase and/or
prevent miniaturization of the hair follicles. If you completely
discontinue the use of these medications, the hair follicles that have
been kept in anagen will switch into the telogen phase and shed within a
few months. Even worse, the follicles will miniaturize again. Richard Lee, MD Regrowth, LLC www.minoxidil.com
