Pyrithione Zinc Shampoo
Are shampoos containing pyrithione zinc, e.g. Denorex, Head &
Shoulders, DHS, etc., beneficial in the treatment of MPB?
Perhaps, yes. A fairly recent article in the August 2003 British
Journal of Dermatology, Volume 149 Issue 2 Page 354 concluded “Hair
count results show a modest and sustained improvement in hair growth
with daily use of a 1% pyrithione zinc shampoo over a 26-week treatment
period”.(http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/links/doi/10.1046/j.1365-2133.2003.05435.x/abs/) Granted, a 6-month study cannot be conclusive in evaluating a treatment
for MPB, but the preliminary findings are promising. It should be
noted, however, that 5% or higher minoxidil should be used as the
primary topical medication as “the benefit of the 1% pyrithione zinc
shampoo used alone tended (P < 0·1) to be apparent only to the
investigator”. Additional information can be accessed at http://www.dermatologytimes.com/dermatologytimes/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=18433 Richard Lee, M.D.
