Question Topic

Generic Finasteride

Question

Hi, I'm a 21 year old male from the UK and I've been experiencing moderate hair loss throughout the front and centre of my scalp since about 18 months ago. Recently I have started to take generic finasteride (1mg) called Finpecia manufacured by Cipla (http://www.cipla.com/ourproducts/Dermatological%20products/finpecia.htm). I purchased it from www.qualitygenerics.com, and I've been on it for about 3 months but I havent seen any significant improvements yet. Is there any reason why I should doubt the effectiveness of this generic finasteride (1mg Finpecia), as opposed to the original finasteride (1mg Propecia)? Please explain. Many thanks.

Answer

I'm not surprised it's not working. I would never recommend a 'generic' substitue for Propecia. India (where cipla is located) is the world's primary source of counterfeit medications. Furthermore, there are no studies to show that finpecia is finasteride. On a similar note, I DO NOT recommend splitting proscar pills (5mg finasteride) as a hair loss treatment. There are no dosing, safety or efficacy studies for a chopped up pieces of proscar. Don't waste time or money, use Propecia 1mg finasteride. Sincerely, Dr. B. doctorb@baumanmedical.com
