Can body hair be used as donor follicles for the scalp?
Can body hair be used as donor follicles for the scalp?
Yes. The newer techniques of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) allow for transplanting hairs from essentially any part of the body to the scalp, but the procedure can only be recommended in very unusual circumstances. One of the major problems of using body hair as donor follicles is that the technique is extremely time consuming. Although the quality of the transplanted hair growing on the scalp is usually acceptable, the growing angle cannot be controlled. In the rare occasions when body hair is used as a donor site in patients who have a limited or exhausted donor areas in the scalp, the follicles are placed in between native or previously transplanted scalp hair to increase hair volume or to cover less aesthetically important areas, such as the center of a fully grafted scalp.
